The xbox controller was originally a large cumbersome device used with the xbox to play video games. It was dubbed the "duke" controller, and frankly, it sucked. After microsoft released a new xbox controller for Japan's xbox release, they quietly released the same controller for the rest of the world. The newer slimer controller which has been with every xbox sold for the last 3-4 years, is dubbed the "s controller". The newer xbox controller has a better placement of the black and white buttons, as well as reconfiguring the a b x y buttons into a pyramid, which is a much better placement than the prior xbox controller. xbox controllers also allow the use of a memory card in the back of the xbox controller, so you can save games in there instead of on the xbox hard drive.
